Erotica has become popular for various reasons. But one of the main appeals of well-written erotica is that it enables the reader to submerge in a fantasy. Better yet, it guides readers to develop their own version of the fantasy, adding elements as they please.

Video, on the other hand, is visual. The footage imprints the visual in your mind, leaving very little room for your imagination to run wild. Besides, some videos can be truly disgusting. In my opinion, porn is bad. Those types of platforms are degrading to the actors, especially the female ones.

Let’s be honest. No guy in his right mind dreams of marrying a porn star. Do you want to be the 1001st guy to enter her? Only if you have no self-respect. Porn is even worse than prostitution. At least, prostitutes perform their services behind closed doors. Porn stars upload their videos on the internet.

But with erotica, you don’t get to see the person. Although their physical description may be in the story, that still leaves plenty of room for interpretation. You picture them as you see fit.

What makes erotica even better is prose that guides the reader through the developing connection between characters that reaches a boiling point. Then, all bets are off. They can no longer contain their desire for each other, and they completely lose control.

Erotica needs a premise, and I feel that so many stories in this genre lack that. The main focus is sex. A reader needs to be taken on a journey and feel that the characters are relatable to immerse fully in the fantasy. They can see themselves in the same position as the character they desire, and that’s what makes the story interesting. The reader is living vicariously through their favourite character.

Lastly, after readers are hot under the collar, the last element that completes a great erotica is a twist. Just when readers thought that the premise was headed one way, they are misdirected and served an ending they hadn’t expected.

A good erotic story is a journey. It introduces the characters, their struggles, and then the premise builds up until restraint becomes inconceivable. At the end, the reader is flipped upside down and questions what they read.

I’ve written several erotic stories with such a premise. I selected ten of the best stories and compiled them into a book called 10 Erotic Short Stories Vol. 2 The book has been out for just over a month, so get yourself a copy now.
