Many of us want to have as much sex as possible. But what if you’re going through a dry spell and are celibate involuntarily? Sure, there’s a certain period that can pass without you feeling any negative change, but eventually, going without sex for prolonged periods can have adverse effects on your mood, lifestyle and health.

How often should you be having sex? That varies from person to person. It’s not a one-size-fits-all approach. What’s important is that you feel satisfied with your sex life.

Having a strong desire for something but not being able to get it can lead to frustration. You feel that it’s out of your control, and being in that situation can make some people very irritable. It’s like a child who wants his favourite toy, but his parents won’t buy it for him. Crying, throwing a tantrum and isolation are usually the retaliation strategies deployed in such situations. As adults, we display the grown-up versions of such behaviour.

Frustration harboured over a long period can devolve into anger. You become irritated at small inconveniences, which accumulate and can result in you acting out in rage.

Loss of sleep or uncomfortable sleep is another side effect of being deprived of sex. Subconsciously, you are unsatisfied with being sexless, and your mind stores that information. Thinking about that regularly can prevent you from falling asleep within a reasonable time and may even result in nightmares.

Waking up groggily because of uncomfortable sleep is another side effect. A person usually gets a good night’s rest when they have peace in their heads and they feel content with their lives.

It’s also common for people to feel more anxious when they lack sex. A person can develop a cold or flu because of stress. Some physical effects include vaginal tightness and genital sensitivity.

Some health outlets have reported that a person risks getting cardiovascular diseases if they go without sex for a long time. By having sex regularly, your body ensures that you have a balance of progesterone and estrogen levels, helping you to reduce the risk of heart disease.

Moral of the story: have sufficient sex so that you reduce the risk of mental and physical health problems.
